Terminal history:
A legacy of growth

For almost a century, John Glenn Columbus International Airport has connected travelers to destinations near and far. Our current terminal, built in 1958, has served as the gateway to Columbus for generations. As our city and region continue to grow, so do the demands of modern air travel.

From 1958 to today:

  • 1958: The current terminal opens, designed for a much smaller Columbus and a different era of aviation.
  • 1980s–2000: Renovations and expansions bring updates, but the terminal’s original structure remains.
  • 2024: CMH reaches a record-breaking 8.9 million passengers, underscoring the need for a modern facility.
  • Today: Aging infrastructure requires a complete overhaul. Not just an upgrade, but a brand-new terminal built for the future.

Why a new terminal?

While our existing terminal has served us well, it was built in a time before modern security, larger aircraft, and the surge in passenger travel we see today.

The new terminal will provide:

  • Streamlined security with a central checkpoint.
  • Improved accessibility for all travelers.
  • A modern, more efficient experience for the next generation of air travel.

As we look ahead, we also honor the past while building something truly transformational for Columbus.

Building for the future: Key projects

A new terminal isn’t built overnight—it takes years of careful planning and foundational projects to bring it to life. Several major initiatives are already underway to prepare CMH for the future and ensure a smooth transition to the new terminal.

South runway relocation:
Expanding capacity

In 2013, we completed a major airfield enhancement by relocating our south runway 702 feet to the south. This project increased the distance between our two parallel runways, allowing for simultaneous takeoffs and landings. This foundational project set the stage for long-term development, including the construction of our new terminal.

Rental Car Center:
Centralizing rental car access

In 2021, we took the first visible step toward our future by relocating rental car operations to the center of our airport property. While currently accessible via shuttle, the facility will soon be seamlessly connected to the new terminal via a pedestrian bridge, offering travelers a direct and convenient link. Next to the Rental Car Center, a new 5,000-space parking garage will provide even more options for travelers, all tied together by a modern transportation center.

Taxiway C relocation:
Making room to grow

As we prepare for a new era of air travel, we need to create more space on our south airfield. Relocating taxiway C slightly south was a critical step, ensuring we have the necessary footprint to build a terminal that meets the needs of today’s travelers and tomorrow’s aviation advancements.

The Blue Shuttle Lot closure:
A new terminal takes shape

In December 2024, we took another major step forward by permanently closing the Blue Shuttle Lot—the future site of the new terminal. To ensure travelers still have convenient parking options, we expanded capacity in the Red Shuttle Lot, adding additional spaces to accommodate demand.

Temporary Cell Phone Lot:
Keeping pick-up easy

In 2025, we opened a temporary Cell Phone Lot to continue offering a convenient, free option for drivers waiting to pick up arriving passengers. Located behind the John Glenn International sign on International Gateway, this lot ensures friends and family can still wait nearby without circling the terminal.

In addition to the Cell Phone Lot, we also introduced a 60-minute grace period in the Green Shuttle Lot. Ideal for quick pick-ups or drop-offs, this option gives visitors the flexibility they need without the worry of immediate charges—another way we’re making travel easier during this time of transformation.

Every project brings us closer to a modern, efficient, and seamless travel experience for Columbus.
