Frequently asked questions
How is the new terminal being funded?
The airport is self-sustaining, meaning no local tax dollars will be used to fund the new terminal. Instead, the project will be supported through a variety of sources, including contributions from airlines and tenants, federal funding, parking and concessions revenue, and other non-airline income. The airport will also issue general revenue bonds, backed by future revenues, and apply for federal grants to help cover costs.
Why do we need a new terminal now?
Columbus has been an epicenter for air travel since the very beginning, and our current terminal has served the community since 1958. While it has undergone updates over the years, many essential systems are reaching the end of their useful lives.
To meet the needs of our growing region and the millions of passengers we serve each year, we’re building a terminal designed for the future. Our award-winning global architecture firm Gensler and local partner Moody Nolan are creating a modern, passenger-friendly facility that enhances the travel experience while preserving the welcoming spirit our community loves about CMH.
Where will the new terminal be located?
The new terminal will be built where the Blue Shuttle Lot and Cell Phone Parking Lot once stood, across International Gateway from the existing Rental Car Center. This location allows for a seamless transition while keeping the airport accessible and convenient for travelers. Check out the latest property map to see how the airport will be configured in 2029.
What will happen to the current terminal once the new terminal opens?
Once the new terminal is up and running, the current terminal will close and be demolished to create additional overnight aircraft parking. This added space will allow more planes to be onsite and ready for their first flights of the day, improving efficiency and connectivity for travelers.
Will the new terminal include a new parking structure?
Yes! Plans for the new terminal include a new 5,000-space parking garage to ensure convenient and accessible parking for travelers.
What will happen to the current garage after the new parking garage opens?
The current garage will remain open and available for airport parking, providing travelers with multiple parking options even after the new terminal and parking garage are operational.
How many more gates will there be?
The new CMH terminal will feature 36 gates, adding 7 more than the 29 currently in operation. This expansion will allow us to accommodate 51% more passengers daily, supporting the growing demand for air travel in Central Ohio.
This terminal marks the culmination of more than two decades of planning and development at CMH—but we’re still thinking ahead. The design includes space for future expansion to the east, allowing for additional gates as Central Ohio continues to grow.
Will new runways need to be built?
No. The existing runways are able to meet the current and future needs of our passenger growth.
What are the benefits of moving from three concourses to one?
Today, having three separate concourses and security checkpoints means passengers can only access the amenities within their specific concourse, which also limits opportunities for businesses and vendors. By transitioning to a single, centralized concourse, we’ll create a more efficient security experience while giving passengers full access to all amenities—no matter which gate they’re flying from.
When will the new terminal be completed?
Construction is already underway! Groundbreaking took place in December 2024, and the new terminal is set to open in early 2029—nearly 100 years after CMH first opened in 1929.
Will this project benefit small and local businesses as well as local workers?
Absolutely! The Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA) supports policies that benefit our community. We want to ensure the design and construction of this transformational project will benefit the community that it will serve. This includes working with a wide range of businesses and supporting local workers, including union labor. One of CRAA’s commitments includes:
- Pay wages and benefits equal to the base wage and fringes established in the prevailing wage schedule to all contractors performing onsite work on the new terminal project, which will be enforced by project contracts.
Will airport operations or flights be impacted during construction?
Construction is already underway, but because the new terminal is being built while the existing terminal remains fully operational, flights and airport operations will continue as usual. Travelers can expect normal flight schedules throughout the process.
However, some roadway adjustments have already been made, and traffic patterns may continue to evolve. We encourage travelers to check current roadway advisories before heading to the airport and follow us on social media for the latest updates!
